A new European Innovation Council – Innovative or not?
Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, has proposed that a new European Innovation Council is established. Eurocadres has written to the Commissioner asking about the proposal.
Research and innovation are important for the future of Europe. More cooperation is needed between the EU Member States, innovators, companies, research institutes etc.
In the letter to Commissioner Moedas, Eurocadres puts forward some questions about the idea to establish a new European Innovation Council.
There is already the European Research Council, which kind of relation would the new Innovation Council and the Research Council have? Would the creation of a new Institute lead to overlapping activities? How to create a meaningful division of work?
EU also already has the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Their key activities include reinforcing the innovation capacity of the EU Member States, to create entrepreneurs of tomorrow and prepare for the next innovative breakthroughs. As EIT expresses about itself: ”The EIT creates an unprecedented level of collaboration between innovation and excellence centres with the aim of boosting the innovation process.”
With these already in place Eurocadres asks which kind of role the new European Innovation Council would play.
With these already in place Eurocadres asks which kind of role the new European Innovation Council would play.
There is also the aspect that the creation of a new European Institute would unavoidably bring costs and it would need an own administration.
Eurocadres does not yet have an opinion about the proposal to establish a European Innovation Council. The aim of the sent letter is to get more information to be able to make a well-informed decision.
On the same day that the letter was sent the Commission launched a Call for Ideas for designing the Innovation Council. Eurocadres pointed out in the letter that impact analysis and public consultation is carried out before any proposal is made.
