The single market changes rapidly and affects professionals

The Internal Market and Consumer Protection committee of the European Parliament organised a public hearing on the Single Market Strategy yesterday. Eurocadres' Policy Officer Janina Mackiewicz spoke at the hearing from the professionals' point of view.

At a public hearing organised by IMCO, Policy Officer Janina Mackiewicz participated in a panel discussion with other experts from different interest groups.

The discussion was on creating more opportunities for consumers, professionals and businesses, and boosting enforcement in the single market.

Mackiewicz highlighted in the beginning that the single market strategy affects professionals in many ways, and that Eurocadres wants to support the measures to build a stronger Europe and ease the movement of professionals across borders in a fair way.

Digitalisation raises questions about taxation, labour law, registration procedures and social security.

- The strategy lacks an analysis of how the labour market and working conditions are affected by digitalisation. Digitalisation is changing the way we work, how businesses operate and the way we consume. It is a megatrend that affects all parts of society, she said. It raises questions about taxation, labour law, registration procedures and social security, she continued.

She also underlined that it is important to keep the discussion alive on EU level and it is vital to include the social partners in evaluating potentials, risks and challenges.

The single market is changing rapidly. Many professions will lose job positions, whereas new will grow. As a result, many of these new jobs will require a different set of skills.
